Street Art

In a city like New York, fashion, design and any trend (even the art) have their representation in the streets. This city is full of Graffitis, and specially my neighborhood in Brooklyn (East Williamsburg). Walking around the streets feels like being in the hallways of a contemporaneous museum.
The artists go to the streets and print their ideas, their style, their recoveries and their talent wherever there is a flat surface. Often they are artists without any reputation who want to show their fantastic and phantasmagoric creations. These true works of ephemeral art that last what another graffiter or the erosion wants.
Graffittis fill the streets of color, forms and extravagancies, in old factories or in the entrance of any restaurant or shop. It is not surprising that this artistic manifestation is very appreciated by many people and sometimes the merchants do not hesitate to contract the best artists to attract the attention of the clients towards their business.
Some people can consider this art trend as something undesirable that dirties the cities, and it is true sometimes since there are bad graffiters with bad intentions, but in this city talent is always welcomed, especially if it is within the reach of everyone.
I imagine Picasso, Dalí or Gauguin painting in the streets their marvels. But the graffiti is an art of this age, and the art is in the eyes of the one that looks at it.

This art work is in the rooftop of my building: art at home.

Some graffittis look at you, and if you judge them, they judge you.

El spray, tu talento y tu pulso.
Spray, your talent, and your pulse.

The streets in Brooklyn are full of color and shapes. The streets in Brooklyn are full of art.

    Vale todo, colores, formas, mensajes...
    Everything’s allowed: colors, shapes, messages…

    Some of them are irresistible.

You can find them in any corner, just pay attention!

You have to walk around, that's all!! This is Brooklyn!!

···

My last and great discovery was in Valencia, walking around the city center and having a gelato in one of those hot summer nights. A place that should be known by everyone. An ancient discovery.
Caro Hotel is one of the few places that has gone through all eras and cultures since the city of Valencia was created, or may be even earlier. Remains of Roman circus dating before 126 BC, remnants of the old Arab wall, mosaics and Gothic arches, medieval stairs... And Francesc Rifé was able to respect and integrate all of it in his sublime design.
One of the keys to make everything match was the choice of white and black in almost everything, furniture, floors, walls, accessories... Giving more elegance and sophistication, what is not easy in a place with so much history and culture.
Francesc Rifé must be proud of himself to having achieved this fancy mixture, with design as a tool, ancient invaluables elements with the most current elements of design in this century.  I can not imagine how was it like working with so many factors, knowing what to keep, what to do and how to combine everything with such levels of perfection. It was a high risk, but everybody knows, the highest risk can be the best reward.
For now, the Palacio Marques de Caro is my best discovery...

Caro Hotel is in 14 Calle del Almirante.

The perfection and elegance to choose black and withe.

    Elementos punteros de diseños.
    Fancy design elements.

Remnants of the old Arab wall, mosaics and Gothic arches, medieval stairs...

One of the best parts in the hotel is the restaurant and the cellar.

Os recomiendo el zumo de tomate preparado.
    I recommend the tomato juice.

The perfect mix of style for every era.

                                          ¡Disfrutádlo!
                                          Enjoy it!

I think it's pretty hard to create good & small spaces that catch your attention. But I found one and it is great. It's the D'Espresso coffe shop located in Midtown, Manhattan. It was designed by nemaworkshop.
It is a rectangular space with a bright white bar on the right side and only five round tables on the left side. When you go in, it feels weird because the floor is plenty of books! The books are printed in tiles covering the floor, the endwall and the ceiling. At first, you don't understand why. It must be a good reason. Or may be they just had some tiles left?
Behind the bar there are backlit panels and the lamps come out from them. I said they come out from the wall, because they are not hanging from the ceiling. More weird stuff arround here...
When I stopped thinking about the design, I sat down to drink my coffee and I realized that the wall behind me was an amazing wood wall which I couldn't resist to touch.  The wood had a spike shape, a characteristic of a very good wooden floor. Aaaah! I get it, we're upside down! Well ... The space is designed upside down!.The ceiling should be the wall and the wall should be the floor!
When I realized I couldn't stop looking around. I understood why the logo is upside down, why the signage of the restrooms are in horizontal, and even I realized that the books on the tiles were also upside down! Everything is upside down!
This is a great idea with a great design, in a cozy atmosphere for a cozy space. A good place to enjoy with a great coffee and a good book. But you must to bring your own book or borrow it from the National Library of New York, which is only two blocks away.

D'Espresson is at 317 Madison Avenue, really close to Grand Central.

Those transparent chairs in methacrylate are a very good choice to not disturve the great idea.

The lamps come out from the wall. It is impressive watching these huge lamps in a differente possition than hanging from the ceiling!

Chulo, verdad?
To all these people who are not able to see it, here there is a picture of the space upside down. Awesome, rigth???

These are some pictures from more places by nemaworkshop. A restaurant, a coffe shop and a tea shop.

Fleas, fleas, fleas!!!

···
Reviving old fashion, finding unique trinkets, trying on crazy stuff or enjoying the coolest things in Williambburg. Where??? In the Artist & Fleas market.
The Artist & Fleas is a market placed in one of the coolest neigbourhoods in New York. Artists and craftsman join together to let their imagination fly and sell their creations to the rest of us mortals. They find art in simple things like second hand clothes and vintage items, or in presenting their latest works in leather or beer caps. Whatever they sell or make, there will be someone willing to buy it in such neighbourhood.
A good place to browse on a Sunday morning before to go to the brunch with your friends or much better, the place to find the perfect anniversary gift!

Para los amantes de lo "old-fashion".
    For the old-fashion lovers.

Artists & Fleas is Located at 70 North 7th Street between Kent & Wythe Avenues.

Venden de todo y encuentras de todo!
They sell everything and you can find everything!

I recommend browsing around the area and enjoy a good "brunch" or a "bloody mery".

The braid and chain bracelet was my aniverssary gift "It's like you...".

The Blonde Salad

The famous Chiara Ferragni, the creator of the blog The Blonde Salad, visited the Spa AIRE last Sunday July 29th.
On Friday afternoon, I was running some errands for AIRE when I found out that Chiara was visiting NY, and I immediately thought of inviting her to enjoy some of the AIRE's tratments. I did so, and she came with her boyfriend Riccardo Pozzoli. After some days visiting the Big Apple, a four hands massage was the best idea to charge their batteries before they left for their "coast-to-coast" roadtrip in the US.
My sister Cristina and I follow The Blonde Salad since she started, and she was one of my inspirations to start the blog. It was a honor to meet her and discover that she is a very nice and kind girl.
The team of AIRE was pleased to have them there, and I know they also loved the experience at AIRE.
We hope to see her again soon. I wish her the best, she deserves all her success.

Muchas gracias por venir Chiara!!! Cristina & Lucía.

AIRE de New York

...

A new AIRE arrives to New York. It is a AIRE fresh, glamorous and above all relaxing. They are the baths from Grupo Aire. It is a Spanish company that they already have more bathrooms in Seville, Barcelona and Almeria, in Spain.
AIRE is inspired in the public ancient baths from Greece and Rome. At that time these baths were totally integrated into society, they were part of their daily lives and this new AIRE arrives to the city to prevail in the same way that it was long long time ago.
It has the mixture of the majestic Roman style with the "Ionic" columns and white marble. The European elegance of golden velvet sofas Louis XVI and the chic industrial New Yorker way.
From the street everything calls your attention. Even with the huge size of the space, the reception is super cozy and it introduce you to relaxation and pleasure that you will enjoy. The locker room are the most carefree and modern space with a mix of styles, objects, materials and the best technology. They are the part of transition, where rid of everything that is related to the bustling city it will take you to another world that would never think that may exist in a city like this one.
For industrial  stairs with littles candles, you enter to the soul of AIRE. Six swimming pools to enjoy a journey of health and wellbeing, with hot water, cold, temperate and even salt to float and let your mind take you where you want. In the center of the baths there is the Hammam, a steam room to purify the skin and body from inside.
AIRE's massages are the best relaxation ever. There are spaces for them with a perfect environment with curtains, candles ... You can enjoy them in the swimming pools or on the hot stone relaxation area, which also they offer water, tea and juices to hydrate yourself.
In ancient Rome, the baths were places where enjoy the benefits of water, but also a place to make importants business or discussed how they had to control the empire. If we choose the best of each era and bring it to the twenty-first century, I imagine the high executives of this city closing their deals in a swim surrounded by peace, beauty and balance that usually they don´t have. Sure it would do much better and the world would notice it. It's no secret that the more relaxed mind has a tendency to do good.

Let me introduce you my first public work like interior designer, AIRE of New York.

Even with the huge size of the space, the reception is super cozy. The pictures were taken by Cecilio Puertas.

If you want to try it, you have to go to 88 Franklin St, in Tribeca. Say you are going for me, they will surprise you with something.

Everything  is looked to the senses enjoy every detail.

The locker room is a mix of styles, shapes and textures. Is the transition from the stress and madness to the relax and serenity. One of the pictures by Pieter Estersohn to Vogue.

Nunca habrías pensado que es así, ¿verdad?
You never thought it could be like that, right?

Everything is lit with little candles, even the lamps hanging in the "caldarium" like bubbles.

Muchas gracias!
I dedicate this post to AIRE's team who works every day making the impossible possible. But especially to Adrian for trusting me so much. To Armando for his patience with everyone. To Silvia for being there always for everything. To Lisa for the wonderful massage. And Elton, Omar and Osman to make possible my "demands". But above all is dedicated to Mer, she knows why and for me with this is enough.
Thank you very much!
